Conservation Work

Drake + Hourigan’s approach to conservation sees us consider each building’s unique set of requirements in terms of repairs and future use.

Respecting the existing integrity of the building is a priority. We only replace decayed or missing parts of structures, and believe any addition, whether construction or repair, must not damage existing or authentic fabric and features. Similarly, we ensure that any work should be carried out using methods and materials compatible with the original.

Landscape Design

Landscape design and landscape history are particular areas of interest for the practice. Drake + Hourigan boasts an array of practical and academic experience with historic landscapes.

The restorative and healing properties of green spaces have been known since ancient times and today people are turning to their gardens for solace and recreation. We believe that interior spaces, where possible, should have strong connections with their external environment.
Our work extends to urban landscaped spaces, public gardens for the elderly and children, private gardens and historic landscapes. We design both hard and soft landscaping, including garden structures and planting plans. Ailish has a particular interest in sensory garden design, which has therapeutic benefits children, the elderly and people with special needs.

Sustainable Design

Drake + Hourigan marries the dual concerns of traditional and environmental design.
We place sustainable and low-energy design strategies within a larger network of social and ethical concerns; including universal design & community involvement.

We focus on the integration of environmental building strategies with conservation design, and provide specialist knowledge in the fields of heritage, landscape, sustainable design and environmental building assessment (BER, iSBEM and BREEAM).

Drake + Hourigan has two distinct spheres of sustainable work. Firstly, the completion of conservation projects that conform to Irish and European best practice energy and resource minimisation performance standards. Secondly,
we employ our knowledge of vernacular building design and technology as the basis for design projects with sustainable briefs including Passivhaus standards and BER A rated homes.
